Rose of Sharon Plant Information

The Rose of Sharon plant grows at a medium rate, with height increases of 13 to 24″ per year. They have deeply-lobed, light-green leaves.

The Rose of Sharon has trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom from summer into the fall. The plants that we are selling are double flowers and look more like a carnation than a trumpet.  See the picture on this page titled “Rose of Sharon Plant for Sale at Great Escape Nursery”. Rose of Sharon flowers are short-lived, lasting only a day and attract birds, butterflies and other useful pollinators. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by insects.

Plant Specifications

Rose-of-sharon can be expected to grow in USDA Hardiness Zones 5 to 9. They like full sun to light shade and moist, well-drained and acidic soil. This plant is also known as Althaea, Shrub Althea, and Hardy Hibiscus and has a tight, upright vase-shaped form, reaching 7 to 13ft in height, 6 to 10ft in width, and has large summer blossoms.

It is a deciduous flowering shrub native to east Asia and is the national flower of South Korea.
