Sand Cherry $20

Sand Cherry

The sand cherry, Prunus beseyi, is also known as Hansen’s Bush Cherry. It is a bush type cherry with small tart cherries that are good for eating and leaving some for wildlife.

As for soil and climate, this bush is cold hardy growing in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 8. It prefers loamy soils and requires full sun. Sand cherry has silvery green foliage with white flowers and purple-black sweet edible fruit suitable for home use. Fruits are eaten fresh, dried, or processed as jellies and pies.

The bush is widely planted in rural areas for wildlife food and habitat and the fruits are relished by many songbirds. It also provides nesting cover for a few species of songbirds.
