Lemon Balm Melissa officinalis is a perennial herbaceous herb in the mint family that has lemony flavored leaves. It will grow in full sun to partial shade and grows to 1-1/2’ high by 2’ wide. Lemon balm will grow in soils ranging from sand to clay and is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 9. It is native to north Africa, Europe, and Asia.
This plant is a magnet for bees when it is in full bloom throughout the summer. Lemon balm is used for teas, eating straight out of hand, and in salads. I love just eating them as I stroll through the garden but the really add a special surprise to a salad.
