Kiwiberries MSU Actinidia arguta is a female variety of this perennial hardy kiwi vine which produces grape-sized berries with an intense tropical taste that do not require peeling. Also referred to as ‘Michigan State’, ‘MSU’ is a large-fruited variety found growing as a landscaping vine on the campus of Michigan State University. The variety produces large, oblong berries with good storability and decent flavor, mainly sweet with only some acidity.
Native to east Asia, the kiwiberry is a smooth-skinned relative of the fuzzy supermarket kiwi but is far superior in flavor. The fruit can be eaten out of hand or incorporated into any number of sweet tasty dishes and baked goods.
Kiwis require full sun and a sturdy trellis and yearly pruning for the best results. You will also need a male variety close for cross pollination, but keep in mind that a male kiwi can pollinate up to 8 females.
