Egyptian Walking Onion is an unusual perennial onion that gets its common name by walking its way through the garden while propagating. It does this growing bulbils as topsets on top of the onion to the point that it is too heavy and bends the onion over. When it does this and the bulbils touch the ground, they set root in a fashion that looks like walking across the garden.
The plants look dead in the winter but will send up new shoots in the spring.
The bulbils on top of the onion stalks start out green bet turn red as they grow.
The small, underdeveloped onions at the bottom of the mature plant are edible but are very hot. Eat the tender young shoots and stems as green onions. The bulbils can be eaten, too, if not replanted.
Not susceptible to juglone.
