Carmine Goumi Plant Information

Carmine has the largest fruit and the sweetest flavor of the varieties we offer.  It ripens early to mid-summer and grows to 8+ feet. It is partially self-fertile but has higher yield with cross-pollination.  Carmine goumi stands out for its much larger and sweeter fruit, with more pulp and less skin, making it superior for fresh eating and preserves if you prefer sweeter berries.  Carmine is the top choice for those seeking the largest, sweetest, and least tart goumi berries, with robust growth and adaptability.

The shrub is partially self-fertile and produce fragrant creamy white flowers in May followed by tasty (and nutritious) little red berries the size of small pie cherries in late June. Goumi plants have olive shaped leaves with silvery under tones in addition to red wood.

Carmine Goumi is a hardy plant and therefore is not bothered by pests or diseases. Goumi shrubs begin bearing 2 to 3 years after planting and are very drought and wind resistant. Care should be taken as birds love the fruit from the shrub.

Goumis’ are filled with vitamins A and E and contain more of the nutrient lycopene than tomatoes. Fruit from the plant has a sweet-tart flavor. Goumi can be eaten fresh with other fruit or green salads, and juiced or made into jellies and jams. They are also used for making wine and fruit leather.

Goumi seed is edible, and contains a high amount of protein. A couple of authors claim the seed tastes like a peanut.
