The American hybrid chestnut tree is a significant development in forestry and conservation efforts aimed at restoring the American chestnut (Castanea dentata), which was nearly wiped out by chestnut blight in the 20th century. These hybrids combine the desirable traits of the American chestnut, such as its timber quality and nut production, with the blight resistance of Asian chestnut species, primarily the Chinese chestnut (Castanea mollissima).
