Mountain mint Pycnanthemum muticum is an aromatic wild flower perennial, Native to North America, that is in the mint family. This plant has a wonderfully minty smell when disturbed but in my opinion it is not as flavorful as other mints.
Pollinators flock to this plant when it is blooming in mid-summer. Mountain mint bloom clusters consist of tiny white to lavender flowers that have a silvery cast. The individual blooms open gradually over a period of six to eight weeks in mid-summer to early fall.
Mountain mint is an upright plant growing up to 3’ each year. This mint will spread but not nearly as bad as others in the mint family like spearmint or peppermint. It will grow in both sand and clay and is hardy in USDA hardiness zones 4 to 8. It has silvery green, oval leaves that have sharp tips.
