Five Bells Akebia is a vigorous growing vine adding up to 20’ per year. It has purple/white flowers that need to cross pollinate with another cultivar to produce fruit. The 5-inch fruit is purple in color and tastes anywhere from slightly bland to tropical. This vine is native to Northern Japan. The young shoots are edible and can be used in salads.
Five Bells Akebia grows best in sandy or loamy soil, but will grow in heavy clay. It likes moist but well drained soil and prefers full sun but can handle a fair amount of shade.
If the flowers are cross pollinated in May you will get a fruit that measures up to five inches and ripens in the fall. The fruit is somewhat tropical tasting and can be used in juices.
