Goumi Plant Information

The shurbs are self-fertile and produce fragrant creamy white flowers in May followed by tasty (and nutritious) little red berries the size of small pie cherries in late June. Goumi plants have olive shaped leaves with silvery under tones in addition to red wood.

Hampshire Goumi is a hardy plant and therefore is not bothered by pests or diseases. Goumi shrubs begin bearing 2 to 3 years after planting and are very drought and wind resistant. Care should be taken as birds love the fruit from the shrub.

Goumis’ are filled with vitamins A and E and contain more of the nutrient lycopene than tomatoes. Fruit from the plant has a sweet-tart flavor. Hampshire Goumi can be eaten fresh with other fruit or green salads, and juiced or made into jellies and jams. They are also used for making wine and fruit leather.

Goumi seed is edible, and contains a high amount of protein. A couple of authors claim the seed tastes like a peanut.
