This is An Update on the Sheet Mulch Perennial Garden. I was at the farm ten days ago and the vines were only about 10-feet long. Now they are pushing forty feet long and they all have fruit on them. I have a load of baby watermelons and at least fifty butter nut squash on the vines. The tomatoes are going crazy. My in-laws picked 27 tomatoes on Friday. Today is Wednesday and I just picked 67 more tomatoes. That is off of just 5 tomato plants!

An Update on the Sheet Mulch Perennial Garden – Annuals
The perennials are doing just as good as the annuals. I’m not planning on harvesting any of the perennials this year with the exception of the occasional mint leaf here and there. I plan on leaving them be, so they can grow and get a good root structure down.

The fertility of the sheet mulch garden is absolutely incredible. Both the annuals and the perennials are doing wonderful. The goal of this garden was to grow great perennials, but the annuals are overtaking everything. Tonight I had to pull a number of vines back and aim them in a different direction just so they didn’t totally overtake the perennials.

Next year I will plant fewer annuals and the perennials will be larger. Ultimately the annuals will just fill a few spaces here and there, but this year I’m reaping the rewards of very fertile soil and annuals that are loving life.

If anyone has an area where they want to increase soil fertility and vegetable yield, I highly recommend a sheet mulch project. From all of my research, it appears that the real production will start next year and will be great for many years to come. I’m so amazed with what I have this year, I just can’t imagine it being better than this!
